We developed a mechanism to align a 12 x 4 grid of syringe pack to a diagnostic plate. The alignment process required an overall pack to plate accuracy of 5 μm. Each of the 48 syringes have a tolerance of 50 μm from its ideal position with a tip diameter of 180 μm. The opening in the target plate has an opening of 300 μm. The alignment process required the pack of 48 syringes to be simultaneously inserted into the plate. A vision system was used to automate this process which took a human operator over 45 minutes to accomplish. The automated system accomplished the task in less than two minutes. U. S. patent is pending on this process.
